"WOMEN ON THE RED CARPET IN CAMBODIA”

In January 2016, during my stay in Cambodia, I decided to visit the countryside to see how was the rural life away from the influence of tourism. I found in my way through the vast Cambodian plain many women on the margins of the road, in their small battered shops and houses, most of the times alone, often in extreme poverty. I wanted to capture that constant presence of Cambodian women in contrast to their low visibility in public life.

There was something very symbolic and lyric in this red land that permeated their clothes, their hair and skin, their belongings. Their land is in them, in their way of living, in their silence also. Women with nothing living on the red carpet.

En enero de 2016, durante una estancia en Camboya, decidí visitar la zona rural para conocer cómo era la vida en el campo, lejos de la influencia del turismo que atrae a miles de personas al país generando un ecosistema propio y diferente. Encontré en mi viaje por la llanura camboyana, a muchas mujeres a los lados de las caminos, en sus pequeñas tiendas destartaladas que hacen las veces de hogar, casi siempre solas, a menudo rodeadas de extrema pobreza. Quería captar la presencia constante de esas mujeres camboyanas en contraste con su escasa visibilidad en la vida pública.

Había algo simbólico y lírico en esa tierra rojiza que impregnaba su ropa, su pelo y su piel, su mundo. Esa tierra estaba en ellas, en su forma de vivir, también en su silencio. Eran mujeres sin nada sobre la alfombra roja.
